A 31 mile, 50km, one-day ultra marathon within easy reach of London, all in aid of funding life-changing operations for children in developing countries.

Perfect for anyone looking to take their running to the next level. Explore the picturesque Chilterns, a stone's throw from London. Even better, it's FREE to run, if you commit to raising funds for Humanity Direct.

New this year you have the option of the full 50km ultra marathon, a 25km half ultra or complete the full ultra as part of a team of up to 5 people!

If you choose to take part as a team you will be given one race number and timing chip that your team will need to get from the start to the finish. It's up to you which part of the course each team member will cover (each person can run more than one leg) but note that you can only hand over at the standard ultra checkpoints and also that it is your responsibility to transport your team members to their handover points.

You will enter on behalf of your team and we'll ask you for the names and other basic information of your fellow team members. You can make changes to your team up until close to the event. Our usual cancellation/deferral rules apply but requesting either will be on behalf of your entire team.

This is a great race for those taking on their first ultra, and we can now also offer 2 ITRA points (for full ultra option only) for those wishing to build experience to gain entry to UTMB!

As with all our events, we'll take care of everything so you can focus on walking, running or jogging the trail. Transfers from the station, free parking, free photos, changing facilities, and plenty of tea and cake are all included.

Do something amazing and have a great day out with us!

So, how does it work?

It's simple. The entry fee is donated to fund a vital operation or, if you prefer, you can enter for FREE and start a fundraising page instead and raise as much as you can, with a minimum of £65 (£95 for a team).

Why we do it

In 2019, Humanity Direct raised £24,000 through the three Humanity Direct Ultras, which helped fund life saving and life changing operations for 35 children - and we are hoping to raise even more in 2024!

“The support we’ve had from XNRG has been phenomenal. Thanks to you we’ve rolled out a vital eye-testing programme for children in rural Uganda with over 600 children receiving free glasses so far. Your donations and dedication have also helped us continue to provide life-saving and life-changing surgery for children whose families are live on less than a $1 a day and who would never be able to afford the medical care they need.  XNRG ultras truly do change lives!"

- Nick Swift, Humanity Direct’s Founder

Navigation and Support

Starting and finishing at Tring Cricket Club HP23 5NG, the route takes in many areas of natural beauty in the Chilterns, including Ashridge Forest, the Grand Union Canal and Wendover Woods. You'll run on National Trails and Footpaths, which have excellent markings in the form of signposts or post discs, along with our own signs and confidence tape. The event is supported by a course manager to maintain event safety and a fully qualified medical crew will be in attendance throughout.

We recommend you familiarise yourself with the route before the start of the race and download the GPX file or OS Maps route onto your watch or phone.

Aid stations

There will be checkpoints at regular intervals with water and food - four for those taking part in the full ultra and two checkpoints for the half ultra. Please bring your own cups.

Due to the risk of cross contamination, we cannot provide checkpoint food to suit all dietary requirements. If you require special food or snacks to suit any allergies or vegetarian/vegan diets, can you please bring your own. Put them in containers, marked with your name and checkpoint number and give them to the checkpoint teams at the start of the race.

Trees Not Tees

Event T-shirts are no longer included in the cost. The cost of T-shirts goes to Trees not Tees and a tree will be planted instead. You have the option of purchasing a T-shirt when entering the event, if you'd like one.

Reviews

Hi all, As ever, I'd like to give some feedback, which is a huge THANK YOU for putting on such a fantastic event. I've loved all the XNRG races I've done, but this ranks especially high on my list. Partly the quality of the course, and the stunning autumnal scenery, but partly also because of the ethos and motivation behind the event itself. To be able to run *and* help raise funds for a great cause just multiplied that warm fuzzy post-race glow tenfold. And thank you, as ever, to all your volunteers, staff, marshals, sponsors, for doing it all so brilliantly and with big friendly smiles on their faces!

Just a message to say a huge thanks to you, Neil and the team for an excellent event yesterday, and particularly to all the volunteers.. I enjoyed it enormously. The route was very well designed to show off the local countryside and suitably challenging for the Chilterns. Start, finish and aid stations were great and the marshals very supportive - good hydration and foods. Way marking was mostly spot on. I hope you will feel that this should be annual event. Suggestions for change? - way marking in Ashridge was a little problematic in a couple of places - I thought before CP3 and off the road to get to the loop around Ivinghoe Beacon. I know Neil mentioned that this was challenge because the Ashridge Estate did not allow you to tie on to trees. Otherwise, other runners were also very positive about the event.

Please pass on my thanks and congratulations on a fantastic event on Saturday. Organisation was perfect, the course was clearly marked and covered a wonderful route, and your staff and volunteers were amazing. Thank you so much for a great race. We will definitely be up for it again (even if my legs don’t agree right now!)

It was such a great event, thanks to you and the team for taking such good care of us. Everyone was so friendly - I especially like the increasing levels of tlc on hand at the later aid stations! And the excellent marking. Runners are a brainless bunch, and it makes a big difference when the route is clear!

Great event, with a impeccably marked course and a great atmosphere.

I completed the Tring Ultra yesterday and I just wanted to say such a huge Thankyou to you and your amazing team for putting in the event. It was so well organised. The route was just lovely and the support offered to us all at the drinks stations was inspiring.

We can't wait to see you there! Questions? Say hello on info@xnrg.co.uk
